William Nesbit Named to Handmade in America Board

ASHEVILLE, NC – William W. Nesbit III, Senior Vice President, Branch Administrator and Commercial Lending Officer, has been named to the board of directors of Handmade in America, the nationally recognized organization for promoting craft and culture for community and economic development.

Nesbit joined Bank of Asheville when it was founded in 1997. A native of Salisbury, he is a graduate of UNC-Charlotte and last year graduated from the North Carolina Bankers Association School of Banking.

Active in civic and professional affairs, Nesbit is a former board chair of Mountain BizWorks and continues to serve on the loan committee for Mountain BizCapital. He lives in West Asheville with his wife and two children.

Bank of Asheville has been recognized as the top community bank in Western North Carolina and one of the strongest banks in the United States. It has five offices in Buncombe County – downtown Asheville, Candler, Leicester, Reynolds and South Asheville.

Founded in 1993, Handmade in America is a nonprofit organization promoting craft and culture for community and economic development in Western North Carolina. It has served as a model for similar programs nationally and internationally.

Asheville Homeless Network Partners with Anything Brand to Knock-out Hunger

ASHEVILLE, NC – Anything Brands Online, Inc. and Asheville Homeless Network are teaming up to address hunger issues through the launch of the new Anything Green Online (AGO) Division Consumer Direct Marketing Program for the Asheville, NC region.

Dr. Moss Bliss, Co-Founder and President of the Asheville Homeless Network, stated, “Asheville Homeless Network (AHN) is working to address the hunger problem in Asheville, not only for homeless men, women and children, but for all those in need in the Asheville area, together with a major produce company in Hendersonville. A plan has been developed to sell fresh organic produce directly to consumers in Asheville, at prices that are about the same as supermarkets charge for regular produce. For every 10 pounds of produce sold to customers, another 2 pounds will be donated to food banks that serve Asheville. The goal of the program is to sell organic produce to 10,000 households in Asheville, which will create an estimated 120,000 pounds of produce donations every month.

“This program will be managed by Anything Green Online, a division of Anything Brands Online (ABOL). Consumers will place orders at the Anything Green Online website and will pick up their orders either at their workplace or a convenient location near their home.

‘Doors of Asheville’ Scheduled for November 19th

ASHEVILLE, NC – HomeTrust Bank has stepped forward again this year as the platinum sponsor to present the Doors of Asheville, an annual fundraising art auction whose proceeds benefit the services of Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO)

The 2009 event will take place November 19 at The Orange Peel and will feature a live and silent auction of over 30 works of art with doors and housing as the central theme. Live entertainment will be provided by Ol’Hoopty.

The Cliffs Residents Raise $50,000 for Local North Carolina Charities

ARDEN,NC – The Cliffs Communities residents at Walnut Cove in Arden, N.C., raised more than $50,000 for local charities through an auction and a charity golf event last month. “It tells you something about the people we have here at Walnut Cove that we tripled the $16,000 we raised last year,” said Koni Findlay, co-chair of the event. The monies are channeled through the Eblen Charities Foundation.

Individual charities will be selected by a joint associations committee, with a focus to help specific projects in need, including support for the arts and children’s initiatives. Charities supported in the past two years include Asheville Performing Arts Center, Eliada Homes for Children, First Responders, MANNA Food Bank, Riverlink, WCCJ Women at Risk and the Western North Carolina Rescue Mission.

“We are pleased to be able to raise this kind of money to help those in need in our community, especially in these economic times. My concern now is, what can we do to top this next year?”

Asheville Greenworks Holds Fundraiser

Asheville Non-Profit Organization Makes People in WNC Smile With Recycled Flowers

ASHEVILLE, NC – In the summer of 2008, co-founders Nancy Pope and Lisa Baker came together to launch a non-profit organization in the Asheville, NC area called Second Bloom. Second Bloom collects cut flowers from grocery stores, weddings, parties, holiday events and other occasions in order to create beautiful, simple flower bouquets for hospice, nursing home, and long-term care residents to keep in their rooms. Since the summer months, Second Bloom has developed an interactive web site, secondbloom.org, and started its first volunteer program in Western North Carolina.

Second Bloom is in search of volunteers near Asheville that can assist with the Flower Exchange Train and help collect donations, deliver flowers and create floral arrangements. Trustworthy volunteers over the age of 18, with a valid driver’s license, are needed for floral delivery and pick up. Volunteers interested in spending time with residents and making small floral bouquets and flower arrangements are also invited to join the team.

In addition, Second Bloom seeks charitable donations and corporate sponsors to provide financial funding in support of their activities and to fund various projects. In 2008 various Asheville area florists, grocery stores and event centers rushed to provide support and flowers for Second Bloom. Biltmore Estate (Lioncrest, Stable Café, The Inn at Biltmore, The Floral Displays Department), Black Mountain Floral Center, Blossoms at Biltmore Park, Flower Gallery, The Bloom Room, Earth Fare, Fresh Market, Homewood, Coleman Place and The Crest Center have all donated flowers to make floral bouquets. Second Bloom continues to expand their flower donations. Recipients of the flowers include Magnolia Health Care Center, Care Partners Hospice, The Laurels of GreenTree Ridge, The McCune Center, Highlands Farm Retirement Community and Shadybrook Assisted Living.

Baker and Pope were inspired to start Second Bloom for personal reasons. Baker’s love of flowers and plants began as a child when taking flowers to her grandmother at the nursing home became a regular outing with her mother. Pope became involved after nurturing a close friendship with Clara Kaminski, a resident of Pisgah Manor. "We couldn’t resist the idea," says Baker. "It has become an amazingly heartwarming enterprise to be involved with day after day," adds Pope.
