Despite the Defeat of the State Slope Bill, Local Leaders Press On

ASHEVILLE, NC – Buncombe County Commission Chairman David Gantt says he’s very disappointed the General Assembly did not approve legislation this session to regulate steep slope development.

But he says the county won’t fail to act. Gantt says in the coming months, he hopes to assemble a group of builders, developers, landowners and environmentalists to come up with a Buncombe County standard that will be a model for the rest of the mountains. Mars Hill Representative Ray Rapp’s Safe Artificial Slope Act faced opposition from the building and real estate industries, and lawmakers who worried it would hurt the mountain economy. Rapp says he hopes to re-introduce it next year.

Biltmore Park Town Square Welcomes New Restaurants

ASHEVILLE, NC – Biltmore Farms LLC and Crosland LLC welcome Travinia Italian Kitchen and Cold Stone Creamery – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to Western North Carolina’s mixed-use destination, Biltmore Park Town Square. Travinia Italian Kitchen brings its upscale Italian dining and catering to North Carolina for the first time. Asheville diners will enjoy extensive pasta, steak and seafood offerings accompanied by a wide selection of specialty martinis and wines at casual dining prices.

The restaurant will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. While most dinner menu selections are served all day, a variety of sandwiches and wraps are added to the lunch menu to cater to the daytime crowd. The 6,423 square foot restaurant will open fall 2009 near the Regal® Biltmore Grande Stadium 15.

“Asheville already has such a rich culinary tradition,” said Charles Thrift, senior leasing associate for Crosland. “We think that Travinia Italian Kitchen is a great addition to the restaurant scene, and Cold Stone – Rocky Mountain adds a quick family-friendly convenient option for shoppers and residents.”

Travinia is currently operating in Greenville, Columbia, Lexington and Myrtle Beach, S.C., but the Biltmore Park Town Square location is the restaurant’s first venture outside its home state. “We chose to expand to Biltmore Park Town Square because Asheville is such a thriving scene for the restaurant industry, and we feel with its variety of uses, this development will attract a wide array of consumers,” said Mark Craig, Travinia Italian Kitchen owner.

Cold Stone Creamery – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will offer treats to satisfy any sweet tooth. This is the first co-branded store of its kind on the east coast. Cold Stone Creamery ice cream is handcrafted fresh daily in the store and served with a variety of mix-in toppings. Customers select a Creamery flavor, such as Sweet Cream, Mint, Cake Batter or Chocolate, then choose from an extensive list of candy, nut and fruit mix-ins. Every ice cream and mix-in combination is considered a creation, and the signature process of combining the ingredients before the customer on a frozen granite stone completes “The Ultimate Ice Cream Experience.”

The retailer will also offer a collection of premium chocolates and confectionary products found in Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory stores across the nation. Customers can enjoy candy by the box, homemade fudge and caramel and an extensive selection of candied apples. The store will be open from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and noon-10 p.m. Sun. The 1,240 square foot eatery will open in early summer 2009 near University of Phoenix®.

Travinia Italian Kitchen and Cold Stone Creamery – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory join Biltmore Park Town Square’s other distinctive eateries, 131 Main Restaurant (6,724-sq. ft.), BrixxTM Wood Fired Pizza Oven (3,882 sq. ft.) which are scheduled to open in spring 2009, and P.F. Chang’s® (6,640 sq. ft.) which opened in December 2008 to rave reviews.

Brixx Wood Fired Pizza Opening Soon at Biltmore Park

Biltmore to Open Antler Hill Village in Spring 2010

Antler Hill Winery Village

ASHEVILLE, NC – The Biltmore Company, which operates the National Historic Landmark Biltmore in Asheville, has announced that it will break ground on a new guest attraction, Antler Hill Village. Located adjacent to the Winery and River Bend Farm on its grounds, the area will be open to guests as part of daily admission to Biltmore. This pedestrian-friendly village, opening spring 2010, will become a center of activity that joins two historically significant and popular attractions at Biltmore.

Antler Hill Village will expand current guest offerings at the estate and include a new exhibition space, village green with live entertainment, dining, shopping and a new outdoor adventure center. As part of this project, Biltmore Winery will be enhanced to offer a newly designed tour and tasting areas. The existing interpretive farm area with historic barn, kitchen garden and farmyard will be incorporated as well. Estimated cost of this project is $18.6 million.

"This area of the estate has become a fun location for outdoor activities, and one that is rich with agricultural history. At Antler Hill Village, guests will learn even more about our family’s interest in agriculture and the outdoors, as well as my great-grandfather’s legacy of making Biltmore self-sustaining."

George Vanderbilt called the hill overlooking the village area Antler Hill. The area where the village will be located was a hub for the estate employees to interact socially with dances, harvest fairs and classes in the evenings.

"This area has a history of hospitality and entertaining," said Cecil. "With the creation of Antler Hill Village, we will draw from this history and offer guests a more contemporary experience of today’s Biltmore."

The company consulted on this project with PGAV Destination Consulting, a nationally recognized master planning, architecture and design firm for many leading museums, historic properties and attractions. PGAV’s clients include the Georgia Aquarium, Discovery Cove in Orlando, Mark Twain Boyhood Home and National Geographic Grand Canyon Visitors Center. The general contractor is PCL Construction Services, Inc., with NC headquarters in Charlotte, NC. PCL is a commercial buildings contractor with a specialized division that manages attraction-based construction, having worked for clients such as SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Disney.
